Holiday Session Style Guide
Did you know that I offer customized styling advice for any type of session? I love working with clients to plan their outfits and helping to coordinate the whole family. What you choose to wear can have a BIG impact on the outcome of your session, and there are so many options! It can be hard to know where to even start. I’ve put together this list of a few tips that should help!
Keep the Location in Mind
This first tip may be a no-brainer, but don’t forget to consider the location of your session first and foremost. This year, my Holiday Minis are taking place at a local Christmas Tree Farm. Not only should you take the weather into account when planning outfits for an outdoor shoot, but also make sure what you are wearing “fits” the venue. For example, you probably wouldn’t dress in formalwear to pick out a Christmas tree, so it would likely look unnatural to wear for photos. For a studio holiday session, consider the backdrop.
Pick a color scheme
This might be the most important thing when planning outfits for your family! Neutrals like white, cream, or tan, are always a go to for any type of session. For Christmas sessions though, it is always fun to include a pop of festive color! For Tree Farm Minis I do suggest staying away from too much green though, to avoid blending in with the backdrop. Here’s a few color scheme ideas to get you started!
Aim to Coordinate, Not Match
There’s probably nothing cuter than kids in matching outfits- especially the littles! As much as I love dressing my own boys in matching clothes, putting the entire family in the same outfit often doesn’t translate well in photographs. It can cause photos to look a little flat or dull. To ensure gorgeous photos, coordinate your family member’s outfits to fit the same aesthetic, but keep the matching Christmas sweaters for another occasion.
Be Mindful of Patterns
I’m not suggesting staying away from patterns all together. I do LOVE a good plaid, especially for Holiday Photos! It is, however, important to avoid too many clashing patterns. There’s no hard and fast rule, but when looking at the whole family I generally find that having more solid colors with just a pattern or two in the mix tends to look best. I prefer to add more dimension with textures and layers. For example, the texture on a cable knit sweater will add some interest, or adding a vest or scarf will add some depth as well.
Be Yourselves!
Are you formal people, or do you lean more casual? Is the decor in your home pretty boho, or do you prefer a more classic look? Pick outfits that represent who your family is. Plus, when you choose outfits this way, you’re more likely to wear them again! Holiday party or Christmas dinner, anyone?!
If after reading these tips, you’re still stumped, I would love to help! If you have a session scheduled with me please feel free to reach out with ideas or photos of possible outfits. Sometimes all you need is an extra set of eyes, and it will all come together!
