Motherhood Photo Session Style Guide

Getting Ready for a Mommy & Me Session

Written By Your Rockford Newborn Photographer

Going shopping, coordinating outfits, making sure none of the outfits clash… This can all be time consuming, and might even be what deters you from getting professional photographs of your family. But I’m here to tell you: preparing for your Motherhood Session does not have to be stressful. I’ve compiled this guide with a variety of color schemes, styles, & outfit ideas. I’ve even included an Amazon Link for simplicity & easy ordering!

Neutrals & Whites are always a great choice for just about any session type. The backdrop for these Limited Edition Motherhood Sessions is simple and floral, so pinks, greens, tans, and other earth tones are sure be beautiful and will produce amazing results.

Flowy dresses add dimension, and different fabrics add texture and warmth to your images. For a more casual look, light denims paired with whites and creams look lovely.

You may notice that the outfit inspiration doesn’t include shoes. For my Motherhood Session set up, I recommend going barefoot. This gives a “cozy” & “comfortable” feel to your photos, focusing on the connection between you and your little ones. If you do wish to wear shoes, choose something simple- casual and clean sandals or sneakers.

Most importantly, always choose something that makes you comfortable! These sessions are meant to be less “posed” and you will likely be snuggling, holding, playing, & tickling your littles. This allows me to capture the genuine love you have for each other! That said, you don’t want to be constantly adjusting straps, or wear something that prevents you from sitting on the ground with your kids.

Additionally, I do have a client closet with some outfits in newborn- toddler sizes. If you’d like to see options, I’m more than happy to send photos. At that age, I only recommend buying something new if they will be able to wear it again. They grow too fast to buy something for them to only be able to wear once!

As always, pre-session styling consultations are included in your session fee! You are always welcome to reach out to me directly if you need some direction when choosing your outfits.
