How to Choose a Newborn Photographer

Gorgeous images of brand new babies snuggled into the sweetest little poses have taken over my Social Media. If you’re expecting, chances are you’re seeing the same on your Pinterest, Instagram, and even TikTok feeds. As a pregnant mom, you’ve got a LOT on your plate- planning and prepping for your new bundle of joy, all while experiencing the lovely (and not so lovely) symptoms of pregnancy. It’s not uncommon that finding a newborn photographer gets pushed towards the bottom of the to-do list. Besides, finding a reputable photographer who can actually achieve those perfect squishy poses you’ve pinned all over your “Baby” Pinterest board, one who you can trust with your newborn, can be tough! It’s hard to know where to even start, so I’ve created this list of the things to consider before deciding on a Newborn Photographer.

Questions to Ask When Picking a Newborn Photographer

  1. Can I See Your Portfolio?

The first thing to look into, before you even consider hiring a Newborn Photographer, is what style of photos you are looking for. If you’ve saved inspiration photos, take a look at them. Do you gravitate towards the light & airy look, or do you love a more dark & moody feel? Do you like neutrals, or bright colors? Do you prefer posed studio portraits, or lifestyle photos at home? If you plan to display the photos in your living room or nursery walls, you should also take into consideration the decorating style of your home. When you choose a Newborn Photographer, the first thing you should be looking at is a photographer’s portfolio and if that aligns with what you are looking for.

  2. How Will you Ensure my Baby’s Safety?

Once you’ve found a photographer whose art you love, you can send them a message or request a consultation. One of the first questions I would ask would be about my baby’s safety. You may even ask yourself, “Is Newborn Photography even Safe?!” Any professional and trust-worthy Newborn Photographer will NOT shy away from talking about the safety of your baby. There are several popular newborn poses that require specialized knowledge of posing and photoshop to achieve safely, so it is very important that you feel comfortable with your Photographer’s expertise and judgement. The safety of your baby should be your photographers TOP priority, yes, even above achieving great images.

  3. What Can I Expect from a Newborn Session with you?

Your Newborn Photographer should clearly communicate with you what to expect from your session. After all, they’ve likely done this hundreds of times, while this may be your very first experience with a Newborn Session! They should give you all the details- where the session will take place (a studio vs. in home), how long to expect the session to take, how to prepare for the session ahead of time, what to wear, the cost of the session, even the process AFTER the session.

There you have it, the top 3 things to ask before you choose a newborn photographer! I should mention, don’t be afraid to ask any other questions that pop into your head! Trusting someone else to handle your new baby can be stressful, so it’s very important to feel comfortable with your photographer.
